4 in a Bar

Champions of Vocal Harmony

"Very talented men...very accomplished...brilliant!"  (RTÉ Lyric FM)

4 in a Bar is Ireland's leading vocal harmony and barbershop quartet. The guys are proud to own a collection of awards and medals, having won the IABS (Irish Association of Barbershop Singing) Gold Medal for quartet singing in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2013. In 2009, they represented Ireland at European-level competitions (Eindhoven), the only male Irish vocal quartet ever to qualify to do so.

Eoin, Tristan, Paul and Shane come from different parts from Ireland but all live and work in Dublin, where they met each other on the singing scene. From this busy world of cathedral choirs, opera productions, movie soundtracks and recording studios, the search for a bit of mischief and close-harmony singing led them to the YouTube clips of world-champion US quartets and thus a curiosity about barbershop was sparked. Having ordered some sheet music online, the guys got together and the rest is history...

Repertoire-wise, 4 in a Bar covers every sort of style, even writing new songs when requested. Classical, spiritual, traditional, Irish, pop, rock - it's been done. Eoin is the group's main arranger, responsible for everything from radio jingles to more complex arrangements of pieces like The Scientist, No surprisesCan't take my eyes off you and others.
In 2011, the guys recorded and released their first album to a full house at the Workman's Club on Dublin's quays. Entitled 'Introducing: 4 in a Bar', the CD showcases a wide selection of barbershop music. More recently, they have released their sophomore album Hide and Seek, which moves away from their barbershop roots, covering much loved classics as Happy Together by The Turtles and the Beach Boys’ God Only Knows, as well more contemporary treats, such as Imogen Heap’s Hide and Seek and Coldplay’s The Scientist.
The albums are available digitally on iTunes or via their website and are on sale in various stores in Dublin city (e.g. Tower Records).

In recent years, 4 in a Bar has been involved in an increasing number of high-profile activities. These include performing for the President of Ireland at Áras an Uachtaráin, Dublin, national and international TV coverage in commercials (companies like Meteor,Wimax internetGuinness, etc), jingle recordings for RTÉ, Newstalk FM and other radio stations, international competitions and festival performances. There was even a 'brush' with the TV phenomenon X-Factor, but that's a long story...
As a group or individually, the guys have performed or recorded with artists as renowned and diverse as Paul BradyAnunaRiverdanceOpera Theatre CompanyThe CorrsChanticleerChamber Choir IrelandCeltic WomanThe Crash EnsembleThe Kronos Quartet and the RTE Concert Orchestra.

It is a priority for the guys to share the knowledge they have accumulated and to inspire and develop the next generation of harmony singers, and to achieve that they present classroom masterclasses in keeping with the principles of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Visiting schools and youth clubs where invited, the quartet brings a mix of fun and singing technique to young people in the hope they will continue the cost-free, healthy activity of ensemble singing.
